BOX white paper – Happiness by Design
Happiness by Design: Multi-sensory Wellness Spaces was written by Valerie Jardon, Director of Workplace Strategy at the Chicago-based architectural and interior design firm, Box Studios. Using a curated collection of scientific data and research from a multitude of sources including cognitive science, attention restoration theory, color therapy, and NASA nap research, Jardon outlines design criteria that can easily be implemented to create wellness rooms in corporate environments. These wellness spaces can be used to improve employees’ overall happiness and well-being by appealing to all of the human senses.
Ideas are presented in the form of 3 different conceptual room models: The Light & Sound Room; The Immersion, Distraction & Reflection Room (IDR); and the Social & Creative Space. The model concepts provide companies with a clear outline of items to consider when implementing each room type. With the idea of wellness and well-being becoming increasingly more important in corporate settings, companies will find that providing employees with stress-reducing amenities will not only reduce a myriad of health and performance issues but will also help to create a competitive edge in their respective markets.
